Galicia
August 19, 2022 by Laura Alexandra Esteban Norat in Women, Documentary, Film, Ethnography, Community

I entirely conceived, pre-produced, filmed and edited Daughters of the Sea by myself. It was produced as a major project for my MA in Documentary Film at the University of the Arts London. It is nominated for a Grierson Award, presented in 10 international festivals and recently commissioned by the Council of A Coruña (Spain), within its education department.

SYNOPSIS
Working among the Atlantic waves is what Jacqueline, Maria and Tomasa love the most. Things would have been easier for them if they had taken different paths. Nevertheless, they have chosen this risky coast which, laden with death and the prevalent chauvinism of the fishing industry in Galicia (Spain). The relentless Atlantic sea is the key point of their lives, and it has instilled in them the bravery required to face their harsh work conditions and the constant sexist discrimination.

Daughters of the Sea examines the strenuous working routines of these women of the Galician coast. They show their love for their professions and villages, but also the genre minimization and underestimation that each of them has suffered from uncles, employees or even parents. Compelling testimonies of gender discrimination are brought to the table, highlighting the bravery of these women and the long road that still lies ahead to achieve gender equality in our contemporary society.

HS2 Cause

February 28, 2021 by Laura Alexandra Esteban Norat in Film, Documentary, Community, HS2

Taster film I produced as a practice for my MA Documentary Film. I met the geography lecturer Dr Larch Maxey, while living in the camp of Euston Square to protest against the HS2 with other activists. I made a little and improvised interview with Larch. A week after, on the 26th of February, Euston Square activists barricaded themselves in a tunnel they had secretly built to stop the HS2 works.

'My Dad'

January 30, 2021 by Laura Alexandra Esteban Norat in Documentary, Portrait, Film

Portrait film I made about my father for my MA Documentary Film. ‘My Dad’ is a simple edit where I intercalated different elements. Firstly, the archive of my father’s family when they emigrated to Germany. Secondly, the voice-over of my grandmother that I recorded randomly when I was a child before she died. Thirdly, a conversation I had with my father and, last but not least, a bit of b-roll of him playing the Spanish guitar. From the individual case of my family, I tried to evoke a collective reality that sometimes tends to be seen as far and with distance.
